Gizmo Share ‘Antiques Roadshow’ Ahead of Debut Album ‘All Your Worships’
Charlottetown band Gizmo have shared ‘Antiques Roadshow’, the latest track from their debut album, ‘All Your Worships’, out October 2 via Victory Pool.
Gizmo have been gradually introducing ‘All Your Worships’ over the past few months with ‘Celestial’, ‘Gift Shop’ and ‘Pantone 312’. Their latest, ‘Antiques Roadshow’, opens the album and gets right to the slightly crooked guitar pop that runs through much of the record.
The song dates back to 2022, although it didn’t properly become a Gizmo song until the band returned to it together the following year.
“The opening lyric to ‘Antiques Roadshow’ was, of course, inspired by the famous television show that I remember watching as a child on PBS at 1 AM,” says Julien Kitson. “Written in 2022 but brought to life a year later, myself and the rest of Gizmo decided to rehash this song and collectively finish it as a group during a band practice before a festival appearance of ours. Upon performing it at this festival, we felt it stick, and it has now become a metaphor anthem for hitting the road for many of our friends.”
Gizmo formed in Charlottetown in 2021 and released the four-song ‘Buddy System’ EP in 2023. For ‘All Your Worships’, the writing became more of a group effort. Kitson still wrote much of the album, but drummer Daniel Hartinger, bassist Spencer Swaine and guitarist Patrick Stephen all contributed songs, with Swaine and Stephen taking lead vocals on ‘Crystal Palace’ and ‘Faulty Straight Edge Downfall’.
The band recorded most of the album at The Hall, a converted community hall in Great Village, Nova Scotia, with Alex Edkins of METZ and Weird Nightmare and Loel Campbell of Wintersleep. Edkins and Campbell produced, engineered and mixed the record, with Greg Obis mastering it at Chicago Mastering Service.
There is plenty of the scruffy ’90s guitar music that has followed Gizmo around as a reference point, but the record doesn’t stay in one place for very long. The songs were worked out through rehearsals and shows over several years, and that comes through in the way they move between short power-pop hooks, noisier guitars and the occasional stranger turn.
‘All Your Worships’ arrives October 2 via Victory Pool.
