Gary Marks Announces ‘Crossroads,’ Shares New Single ‘Crossbeams’

Gary Marks’ new album Crossroads pulls together fifty years of songwriting into a single vinyl release, moving from his early 1970s recordings through to material written in the last few years.

The sequencing does the work for you. Early songs on one end, later ones on the other. You hear the shift in time, but the voice holds steady. Marks first surfaced in the 70s alongside players like John Scofield and Paul McCandless, before they became widely known. Those records found an audience, especially on vinyl, then settled into collector territory. After that, he didn’t fade out or stall. He kept recording. Eight full albums, released quietly, mostly through his own site, outside the usual label promo. The music stayed in motion even when there was no spotlight on it.

‘Crossbeams,’ the latest single from ‘Crossroads,’ due April 18 via Lantern Heights Records, gives a clear sense of how he’s been thinking all along. “Choose your memories very carefully,” Marks says. “They’re the crossbeams of the world you’re living in. They frame and form who you’re bound to be.”

Marks once put it plainly: “I never stopped writing. I only stopped playing the game.” Listening to this, you get what he meant.
