Grandmas House Release Debut Album ‘Baby You’re A Winner’, Share ‘Dance’ Video

Bristol quartet Grandmas House have released their debut album, ‘Baby You’re A Winner’, today via Brace Yourself Records. They’re marking its arrival with a new video for ‘Dance’.

After several years of EPs, singles and a lot of touring, Grandmas House finally have their first full-length out in the world. ‘Baby You’re A Winner’ brings together the rougher edges of the band’s earlier post-punk with a noticeably broader sound. There are still plenty of heavy guitars and basslines, but the record makes more room for harmonies, quieter stretches and the odd unexpected detail. Across its 12 songs, Grandmas House move between the abrasive and melodic without making too much of the distinction.

“We are so excited to finally release our debut album into the world,” the band say. “It feels like a time capsule of all the hard times we’ve faced together, and a testament to the love and friendship the four of us share.”

They describe the songs simply as ones “to dance, cry and scream along to.”

Arriving alongside the album is ‘Dance’, one of its stranger and more atmospheric moments. Yasmin Berndt’s vocal moves against shifting guitars and sudden instrumental breaks, while Morgan Wallace of Fat Dog contributes saxophone.

“This song is about feeling low and alone. Feeling reminiscent of times when you weren’t lonely. Maybe because you were in love,” the band explain. “It’s a reminder to keep going, whilst dancing the pain away.”

Directed by Clump Collective, the video brings back the mysterious headless figure who has appeared around the album’s imagery, this time putting him right at the centre of things.

The record was made with producer Ali Chant at The Playpen in Bristol. It follows three EPs, ‘Grandmas House’ in 2021, ‘Who Am I’ in 2023 and last year’s ‘Anything For You’, but feels less like a neat summing-up of what came before than the point where the band started allowing themselves more room to move.

That suits an album concerned with love and friendship as much as loneliness, grief and uncertainty. Grandmas House still know how to make a racket, but ‘Baby You’re A Winner’ is at its best when those different sides are allowed to sit next to each other.
