Gods & Punks Share ‘Poseidon [Third Wave]’ From ‘A Shrine by the Sea’

Brazilian stoner rock band Gods & Punks have shared ‘Poseidon [Third Wave]’, the second preview of their forthcoming sixth album, ‘A Shrine by the Sea’.

The album arrives on July 3 through Electric Valley Records, on vinyl and digital platforms. It consists of two compositions, ‘The Lighthouse’ and ‘Poseidon’, each lasting exactly 21 minutes and 12 seconds. The vinyl presents them as two continuous sides, while the digital edition divides each piece into four ‘waves’.

‘Poseidon [Third Wave]’ is an instrumental passage built around extended guitar work, organ and an unusually prominent bass part. The band explain:

“An instrumental segment of the 21-minute epic ‘Poseidon,’ this section unfolds through dynamic shifts, extended guitar solos, and prominent organ layers. It is particularly defined by distorted finger-tapped bass lines, gradually building momentum before giving way to muted guitars and atmospheric textures.”

‘A Shrine by the Sea’ was conceived as an ode to the sea. Side A, ‘The Lighthouse’, moves between quieter atmospheric passages, slow doom and heavy Sabbath-influenced riffs, with guest vocals from former Spiral Guru singer Andrea Ruocco. ‘Poseidon’ takes a calmer and more psychedelic route, gradually gathering weight as it develops.

Gods & Punks formed in Rio de Janeiro in 2013 around brothers Alexandre and Pedro Canhetti, taking their name from a Monster Magnet song. Their early records combined the heavy influence of Black Sabbath with the more elaborate structures of Rush. Their first four albums formed the ‘Voyage Series’, beginning with ‘Into the Dunes of Doom’ in 2017 and ending with ‘The Sounds of the Universe’ in 2021.

Following a short hiatus, the band returned with a new lineup in 2024, releasing the ‘Mountains of Garbage’ EP and their fifth album, ‘Death’. The ‘Holograms’ EP followed in 2025.

‘A Shrine by the Sea’ was written and arranged remotely. Rodrigo Sued recorded the guitars and Gabriel Platera the drums in Rio de Janeiro, Pedro Canhetti recorded bass in Santos, and Alexandre Canhetti completed the vocals in Paris. André Leal and Kleber Mariano mixed and mastered the album at Studio Jukebox in Volta Redonda, Brazil. Alexandre also created the cover artwork.
