‘A Prophet After His Turkish Bath’ by Gionatan Scali | Album Premiere

Exclusive album premiere of ‘A Prophet After His Turkish Bath’ by Gionatan Scali, out June 15, 2022.

The “mystical soft-core” sound of Gionatan Scali, east-Londoner, is based on a dreamlike balance of overlapping layers. Slurred vocals and melodic riffs combine for a powerful and wide sound that incorporates psychedelia, krautrock, and Middle Eastern influences.

Gionatan Scali recently released ‘Ride On’ which is followed by ‘A Prophet After His Turkish Bath’. It contains 7 tracks for a total length of 41 minutes of music. Gionatan co-produced the album with Richard James and Lorenzo Martinotti, and work on it began shortly before ‘Ride On’, in February 2019. ‘Perfect Town’ and ‘Suncannotpass+’ are the two singles on the album. Nice Guys Records released ‘Perfect town’ in October 2020. The Record excellently captures Gionatan’s eclectic and unpredictable personality, in which a vast range of emotions can be found.

“We were working with drum machines and analog synthesizers during the making of this album. We were aiming for something blissful, but also vibey and mystical. We were recording ‘A Prophet After His Turkish Bath’ without a drummer at that time, but that didn’t stop us from working on something cool. Actually, the fact that we had that limitation led us to find a new blend of sound that you can hear clearly in ‘Cortazar’ or ‘ Perfect Town’. The consistent tempo of the drum machine kick-snare offered us the flexibility to experiment. When I imagined a man who had changed his personality after taking a “Holy bath”, I came up with the main concept for the record”.

Gionatan has worked with a large array of musicians for live performances and recordings, the bulk of them having a jazz background. Louis O’Shaughnessy, a long-time collaborator who began playing bass during the first record ‘My Curly Hair’ gigs in 2017 and is responsible for the majority of the keyboard and flute sounds in ‘Turkish Bath’. He attended the Jazz Trinity College in Greenwich, London. Bass guitarist Mark Thorne and guitarist Lorenzo Martinotti, who collaborates with Gionatan on music composition, are the band’s core members. The three members work together to create a unique sound combination.
