Spring Hill Post Tide Share Debut Album ‘The City Portal Will Be Open’
Wuhan group Spring Hill Post Tide will release their debut album, ‘The City Portal Will Be Open’, on October 16 through WV Sorcerer Productions.
Today we’re streaming the album in full ahead of its release.
Spring Hill Post Tide formed in 2022. Their music takes in ’70s space rock, Krautrock, psychedelic noise and spiritual jazz, and improvisation has been central to the band from early on. Their Bandcamp catalogue includes a number of live recordings and extended jams.
‘The City Portal Will Be Open’ is their debut full-length. Alongside guitar, bass, drums and synthesizer, the album features tenor and soprano saxophones, ney flute, bansuri, theremin, sitar and violin. Tianyu and Shiyuan Yu provide vocals, while Ellsing Ni contributes Wuhan dialect.
Some of the story behind the album goes back to the outskirts of Wuhan, near Tangxun Lake. The band remember half-ruined schools, reading poetry beside the water and making noise among the ruins. Another memory kept returning during the recording sessions in Yiwu: swimming in East Lake during a storm in the summer of 2023. Night had fallen, the rain was coming down hard and, although exhausted, there was nothing to do but keep swimming towards the shore. That sense of improvisation is still very much part of the record. Spring Hill Post Tide have spent the past few years releasing live sessions and long pieces, and here that side of the band has been worked into an eleven-track studio album.
‘The City Portal Will Be Open’ was recorded at Tianti Studio and GEBI in Yiwu. Li Ping handled the recording, mixing and mastering, with Wang Haiyang producing. WV Sorcerer Productions will release the album digitally and on CD. The physical edition is limited to 300 copies, with a six-panel 7-inch-format sleeve and obi.
