Ethan Gold Announces ‘Earth City 2: Nightfolk,’ Shares Final Single ‘When the Evening Comes’

Gold has called Earth City “art rock for hermits,” which fits the scale and mood of the project. Where ‘Earth City 1: The Longing’ dealt with isolation, ‘Nightfolk’ moves outside, into the city after dark.

The record follows a loose cast of introverts, outsiders, lovers, workers, and restless figures across a single weekend night, drifting through trains, rooms, streets, and half-lit spaces in search of connection, sex, escape, tenderness, or some kind of answer.

The album moves between indie rock, folk, and art rock, with synths, fiddle, accordion, guitar, piano, drums, and rough-edged background vocals folded into Gold’s direct vocal style. Recorded across Glasgow, Berlin, Los Angeles, and Nashville, ‘Nightfolk’ has the feel of a record built in transit: part city symphony, part private diary, part late-night reckoning.

‘When the Evening Comes’ is one of the album’s gentler moments. Inspired by Gold’s grandparents’ relationship, the song turns its attention to devotion, routine, and the small rituals that keep two people close over time. Set at the point where the working week gives way to Friday night, it unfolds as a dialogue between man and woman, with the refrain “Lieb’ mich im Mondlicht… Ich bin dein Licht” giving the track its moonlit centre.

The video for ‘When the Evening Comes’ was produced by Berlin-based production company Bonaparte and directed by Tim Groetzinger. Filmed at Theater im Delphi, it draws from 1920s silent cinema, with visual nods to Fritz Lang and Buster Keaton. The clip turns the end of the work week into a small transformation: labour giving way to romance, routine slipping into performance.

The album also includes the previously released ‘I’m Always Sad,’ ‘The Inhibitionists,’ and ‘I’ll Dance If You’ll Dance,’ each opening another door into Gold’s nocturnal world.
