Disaster Fantasy: New Single ‘The Hourglass’ Previews the Upcoming April EP

The synth-pop duo Disaster Fantasy has returned with their new single, ‘The Hourglass’, released on March 13th.

This track serves as the lead piece for their upcoming EP, which is scheduled for release on April 3rd. Composed of vocalist Ryann Donnelly and multi-instrumentalist Byron Kalet, the pair operates across a significant geographical divide, with Donnelly based on Lopez Island and Kalet in Brighton. Despite the distance, they have successfully overhauled the synth-pop template…

On a sonic level, ‘The Hourglass’ leans into a darker, more brooding electronic aesthetic. The production is characterized by a textured, lo-fi sound-pallet that utilizes atmospheric reverbs and swelling psych synths.

According to lead singer Ryann Donnelly, this EP is their most conceptually driven work to date. The songs are framed from the perspective of characters connected to a fictional Los Angeles bar called The Hourglass. Donnelly describes the setting as mysterious and crooked, drawing direct comparisons to the surreal worlds created by David Lynch, specifically One Eyed Jack’s from Twin Peaks or Silencio from Mulholland Drive. The title itself serves as a direct metaphor for the fear of time running out. This theme emerged from the duo’s real-world challenge of managing limited windows of time to write and record while living in different countries.
