Terror Management Band Channels Fury and Focus on ‘Austerity Gospel’
Terror Management Band’s sophomore album, ‘Austerity Gospel,’ is ready to hit hard and make some noise.
For those familiar with their previous work, ‘Big Box Apocalypsis,’ you already know what to expect: a healthy dose of no-holds-barred noise rock that feels less like music and more like a visceral reaction to the world around us. But this time, it’s different. The Florida quartet, known for their unique blend of art-house sensibilities and blue-collar grit, hasn’t softened their stance. Instead, they’ve taken the volume and chaos, sharpened it, honed it, and made it more biting than ever.
Imagine the raw power of Flipper, the relentless churn of Melvins, and the intricate, unsettling beauty of Unwound, all thrown into a blender and set to “destroy.” That’s the sonic landscape Terror Management Band paints with ‘Austerity Gospel.’
The story of Terror Management Band began in 2018, when Mike Taylor, back in his home state of Florida, reconnected with Kevin Kelley. Now, Florida’s not short on heavy drummers, but Kelley? He’s in a league of his own. Their initial formation as a trio was rounded out by the multi-talented Jeremy Rogers on bass. But as fate would have it, a Swans t-shirt at one of their early gigs in St. Augustine changed everything. That shirt, worn by Alan Mills, was a beacon in a small town, an undeniable sign that he needed to join on second guitar. What Mills brought to the table were these… chords… The kind of chords that temper the band’s initial bludgeon, but only slightly. The result? Songs that still churn and growl, laughing and crying at the absurdity and beauty of this wild ride we’re all on.
And if you’re keeping score, the band’s pedigree reads like a who’s who of Florida’s underground: former members of Palatka, Flaws, Young Ruins, Minimum Rage, Deadaires, Dredger, Hey! Tonal, Burl, Liquid Limbs, and The Goddamn Deluge.
‘Austerity Gospel’ is being released on vinyl via Belladonna Records, with streaming handled by Ashtray Monument Records. For the collectors out there, be warned: the first press is limited to a mere 100 copies across four color variants. And for the truly dedicated, a very limited variant (only 15 copies!) will be available exclusively at ToneVendor record store in St. Augustine.

The album was recorded and mixed by Ben McLeod at Doubleland Studios, with Mikey Allred at Dark Art Audio handling the mastering.
They’ve got a couple of dates lined up to unleash ‘Austerity Gospel’ on the unsuspecting masses:
Saturday, August 2nd at The Ox, Gainesville, Florida, with MOLD!, Golf War, and You Vandal.
Saturday, September 6th at the Sing Out Loud Festival, Shanghai Nobbys, St. Augustine, Florida, alongside Meatwound, Supertwin, and ISYA.
Clear your head and prepare yourself for ‘Austerity Gospel.’ It’s exactly what we need right now.
