New Brutalism Announce Steve Albini-Recorded EP, ‘Requiescat Record,’ Share ‘089’
Knoxville, Tennessee’s New Brutalism are back with their first new music in years, announcing a new EP, Requiescat Record, set for release on September 12, 2025, via Computer Students™.
Today, the minimal rock quartet — Shane Elliott (vocals), Matt Hall (guitar/vocals), David Basford (bass/vocals), and Carey Balch (drums) — offer a taste of what’s to come with the release of their lead single, ‘089.’

‘089’ is a classic rock-structured track that exemplifies the band’s “less is more” philosophy. This ethos has been central to New Brutalism since guitarist Matt Hall and drummer Carey Balch first connected in 1996, eventually forming the band in 1998. Their commitment to direct and honest sound is further amplified by their unique choice of instrumentation: the band members perform on aluminum instruments they built themselves. Lighter than steel, more consistent than wood, and easily machined, aluminum allows for a precision that, as the band attests, translates directly into their music.
The three-track EP, which also includes ‘088’ and ‘087’ in keeping with their strict numerical naming convention, holds a particularly poignant significance. ‘Requiescat Record’ was recorded in 2021 by the legendary Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, and then mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service. Named after a Latin term meaning a prayer for the repose of a dead person, the EP has retroactively become a dedication to Albini’s memory.

Fans can look forward to a high-quality physical release, with ‘Requiescat Record’ arriving on 45rpm, 12-inch 180g HQ vinyl, featuring the same tracklist on both sides.
