jess joy premieres ‘dreams’ video from new LP ‘Won’t Be Kicked Out The Garden’
New Orleans-based artist jess joy has just dropped her new LP ‘Won’t Be Kicked Out The Garden’ through Joyful Noise Recordings and it’s a wild ride.
Produced mostly by Greg Saunier from Deerhoof, this album digs deep into what it means to hold onto love when everything feels like it’s falling apart.
The new single ‘dreams’ comes with a cool video and asks a big question: “Do we possess, or are we possessed?” That kind of vibe runs through the whole album… personal but also kind of cosmic.
‘Won’t Be Kicked Out The Garden’ plays with the idea of original sin, but with a twist. jess joy takes on the role of the rebel child or fallen angel who’s been kicked out of paradise but refuses to leave for good. The album jumps between different moods and places…. from chaotic nights in Berlin to smooth saxophone moments, folk-inspired trips to the moon, and dreamy synth sounds fading away. It’s a journey through grief and love, trying to piece everything back together before the world got split into good and evil.
She’s inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin, who said “To be whole is to be part; true voyage is return.” That feels like the heart of this record. joy’s music is full of dramatic vocals, wild energy, and lyrics that hit hard about love, pain, and life’s messiness.
Since her solo start in 2023, jess joy has put out two albums. ‘Patreearchy’ took on patriarchy with a sound NPR compared to Sparks, and ‘Sourceheiress’ was a visual album about reclaiming power, made with Mike Byrne from Smashing Pumpkins. Now, with this new album, she’s mixing experimental sounds with real emotion and killer visuals again.
She’s playing a record release show in New Orleans on June 8th — definitely worth checking out if you want to experience her energy live.
