‘Tomboy Femme’ by Applied Communications | New EP, ‘Applied Communications Has A Midlife Crisis’

Exclusive track premiere of ‘Tomboy Femme’ by Applied Communications, taken from the upcoming EP, ‘Applied Communications Has A Midlife Crisis,’ out April 26th, 2024.

‘Midlife Crisis’ marks the return of Max Wood, also known as Applied Communications, after a 17-year hiatus. This EP features five alt-pop tracks chronicling Max’s experiences with depression, gender dysphoria, existential turmoil, and self-acceptance. Departing from the style of previous Applied Communications albums like the divisive ‘Uhhh Sort Of,’ this EP is more accessible and rhythmically driven, yet it retains Max’s deeply personal and distinctive touch.

The lead single, ‘Tomboy Femme,’ narrates a journey of self-discovery that Max has been crafting over nearly two decades. Max describes it as a reflection of their ongoing exploration of identity, incorporating diverse samples and nods to influential pop songs. The lyrics fluidly blur the lines between reality and fiction, echoing Max’s evolving self-perception.

The EP’s production was expertly handled by Scoobert Doobert (known for his work with CHAI and Victor Marc) for mixing, and Riley Knapp (recognized for collaborations with Rosie Tucker and Lou Roy) for mastering, resulting in a sonic quality that surpasses previous efforts by Applied Communications.
