‘Revolution 2020 Blues’ by Lost Ox | New Album, ‘Stuck’
Exclusive track premiere of ‘Revolution 2020 Blues’ by genre-blending jammers Lost Ox, taken from their upcoming album, ‘Stuck’, out this Summer via Dutch Records.
The band, known for combining elements of funk, psychedelia, jazz, Americana, and progressive rock, has been a staple of the scene since 2017. Rooted in the jamband resurgence of the 1990s, their style encompasses many familiar jam tropes, all executed and reimagined with an inspired, dauntless precision. Since 2017 the band has released two full length albums, ‘Wildheart’ (2018) and ‘Earthsnake’ (2021), with another full length album, ‘Stuck’, to come in Summer 2022. Before the pandemic, the Ox stampeded down the coast to California and east toward the Rocky Mountains, playing over 120 shows in 2019.
The origins of the Ox are mysterious to many. Way back in 2011, Dylan and Reed were both jazz performance majors at Lewis & Clark College. Dylan was walking the halls one day when, upon hearing the bass line to the Grateful Dead’s ‘Shakedown Street’, he paused. When he peeked in the window, Reed was inside. The two have been giggin together since. That’s a lot of jams, man! A long strange trip later, Scot’s band was playing at a Widespread Panic pre/after-party; Dyl was along for the ride. After some cordial greetings, Dylan found his way on stage, and a musical friendship was born.
These core 3 dudes are joined by a rotating cast of top-tier keyboard wizards. While the Lost Ox sound continues to evolve, one quality that has yet to waver is their relentless commitment to progression and exploration. Characterized by intriguing lyrical interplay, shredding guitar solos, funky bass lines, and complex arrangements.
Recorded in northeast Portland, OR during the end of Covid lockdown, ‘Stuck’, Lost Ox’s third full-length album, features an all-original brew of funk, blues, progressive rock, and psychedelic country, with noticeable nods to the jam band greats of the 90s. With shredding guitar solos, funky bass lines, and complex arrangements the band is very much in their wheelhouse on this release. On this album the band refined their instrumental storytelling vehicles, complementing them with top notch lyricism to create multi-part epics with exciting climaxes and delicate moments. The title track, ‘Stuck’, features a four part string section and Afro-Cuban styled “Bean Dip” features multi-part horn arrangements. The band lived through and participated in the 2020 civil rights protests here in Portland, and with quick, rapidfire lyrics and an anxious, funky backbeat ‘Revolution 2020 Blues’ captures and communicates essential and communal angst of the time.
