‘Schmungus’ by Carl Fungus | EP Premiere +
Exclusive premiere of ‘Schmungus’ EP by Carl Fungus.
The debut EP from Carl Fungus, ‘Schmungus’, arrives on April 1st. The six song EP follows a trio of successful singles and videos released last year. The EP is released physically on a cassette tape and digitally, although you’ll need to pick up the physical release to hear ‘Schmungus’ in full as the last track is absent from the digital release.
The idea of home, and what makes a place your home, is central to all the songs on ‘Schmungus’. It found its inspiration in, and perfectly captures, what you could call the Berlin shuffle. That is, the endless coming and going of people, the effervescent, fleeting quality that friendship and love hold in a city in flux, the feeling of trying to build a home and a community while everyone around you strives to do the same – as he puts it in Lost Without Public Transportation: “Home is not a place but a time, and it’s gone.”
‘Schmungus’s’ spring release date is a perfect fit for the EP’s sound and substance. The EP is full of bright, jangly guitars, dreamy synths, soft, expressive vocals reminiscent of Stuart Murdoch, as well as lyrics that chart tender new beginnings and conjure wistful summers. Carl Fungus describes himself as “part psych rock kid, indie pop millennial, and American grandpa.” This complimentary blend of influences and perspectives is evidenced in the tight, catchy make-up of songs like A Rose, the dreamy, progressive nature of cuts like ‘Naked Dinner’, and the melancholy, contemplativeness of slower numbers like ‘Silence is Easy’ or closer ‘Granite Sun’.
‘Schmungus’ is something of a lockdown baby for Carl Fungus, written and recorded over the course of the various restrictions and upheavals that defined the last few years. However, Carl Fungus plus band hope to play as many shows as they can in 2022, building on and cementing the band’s identity as a warm and inviting live act.
