‘Mirror Flexing Jaw’ EP by Kyoto Kyoto | “Strands of Anatolian psychedelia, Krautrock, math-inspired guitar play and post-rock”
Exclusive premiere of ‘Mirror Flexing Jaw’ EP by experimental trio Kyoto Kyoto.
A concoction of intrigue, poetry and noise. The debut EP from Kyoto Kyoto releases via Blitzcat Records.
The south—east Londoners invoke strands of Anatolian psychedelia, Krautrock, math-inspired guitar play and post-rock intensity across the five track record which clocks in at just under 17 minutes.
It starts with the pulsing torment of ‘Fenderr’, a story seen through the eyes of an ageing dog as he surmises time being the only constant in chaos. ‘Gaacher Blitz’, a chasm of distortion and haunting vocals, climaxing in joyous, krautrock—punk fused outburst. Into the heart of ‘Mirror Flexing Jaw’ for an interrogation of the self — none more so experienced than in evolutionary ‘Seifert’. The lyrics pay tribute to the sombre tones of Zbigniew Seifert, a jazz violinist whose career was cruelly cut short by disease. ‘Grangbeen’ typifies the Kyoto Kyoto blueprint – hazy spiritualism with jazzy undertones in one segment, only to descend into a symposium of prog—noise rock chaos in the next. It marks Lev’s journey from sleepy hometown beginnings to a capital city’s continuous struggles with health and harmony. The final destination where all must change is the delirium of ‘Dart Oporto 56’. The song, written in a recording studio above metro station ‘Oporto’ in Madrid, “Is an ode to people whom I consider to be larger than life,” recounts Lev. “People who lose themselves completely in their craft. And reflecting on how they must deal with the hard times and obstacles they face.”
Kyoto Kyoto is Levent Ceylan (Butch Kassidy), Scott MacDonald (Rosie Alena + IMOGEN) and bassist Joel Marten (Biig Piig). The band came together in the autumn of 2019, quickly earning a reputation on the live underground scene for their spellbinding exhibits of ambient and experimental guitar music
