Sunglaciers Turn Inward on ‘Ballad for Eddy’ from ‘Spiritual Content’

Sunglaciers don’t overplay their hand on ‘Ballad for Eddy.’ The track, taken from their new album ‘Spiritual Content,’ moves with a kind of unforced calm, settling into a slow sway of dusky drums, auxiliary percussion, and a synth bassline that stays just under the surface.

The title points to Eddy Grant, but the song doesn’t lean on tribute in any obvious way. It’s more about endurance than homage. Evan Resnik delivers the vocal in a low, steady tone, tracing lines about early ambition and the less photogenic side of band life. Long drives, borrowed spaces, the drag of keeping momentum when things stall out. Nothing dressed up.

The accompanying video, directed by Resnik, sticks to that same idea. It pulls from old tour footage across the US and UK. There’s no heavy concept, just a band looking back at where they’ve been and what it took to get there.

‘Ballad for Eddy’ fits neatly into ‘Spiritual Content,’ Sunglaciers’ fourth full-length. The record leans into a mix of indie rock, post-punk, and psych, but keeps things grounded in songwriting that feels personal. Across nine tracks, the band circles themes of purpose, routine, and stepping outside of it.

When asked about it, Evan Resnik said: “I was struggling to come up with a concept for the video for ‘Ballad for Eddy’ and I came across these old tour clips. We’ve been doing bigger cross-country trips around the US and UK in the last few years, so there was a lot of footage. Most of it I forgot I had. It got me a little sentimental, reliving all these great experiences and moments that we’ve shared as a band. It reminded me that all the hard work is worth it for the friendship and camaraderie.

The song is inspired by Eddy Grant, who wrote ‘Electric Avenue,’ and how tireless and dedicated to music he was. Sure, being in a band, booking DIY tours, recording albums, and sleeping on couches and floors is hard. But we’re also really lucky for the opportunity, and the memories that come out the other side are priceless. I’m even more inspired by Eddy Grant when I think about how much harder it all was for him as a young person of colour in a foreign land. His life story is really interesting, you should check it out.”

Elsewhere on the album, references stretch from J Dilla to Emily Roebling, pointing to a broader interest in work, legacy, and the people who keep going even when the odds aren’t in their favor.
