Abronia Share New Single ‘Gemini’ from Upcoming Album ‘Shapes Unravel’
Portland sextet Abronia have long occupied a singular space in the psych-rock continuum, where the dry heat of Morricone-esque noir meets the spiritual urgency of avant-jazz.
On “Gemini,” the latest cut from their impending LP Shapes Unravel, the band widens the aperture. The track marks a significant evolution in their sonic architecture, incorporating strings and brass for the first time. This addition lends a newfound orchestral depth that expands their language without diluting the visceral punch of their signature, floor-shaking percussion.
The composition navigates a precipice between political anxiety and collective resilience. As vocalist and saxophonist Keelin Mayer explains:
“I was originally inspired by the would-be dictator’s astrological sign, and the way he’s destroying the country. I was also thinking about the duality that the astrological sign Gemini represents and the ecological collapse we are currently witnessing. Towards the conclusion of the track we emerge from despair and band together to look for a way out.”
Abronia’s ‘Shapes Unravel’ arrives February 20th via Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube Records.
