Chris Garneau is wiping the slate clean. After scrapping a whole record, the New York singer-songwriter is announcing his new album, ‘In Reverse,’ due out January 23rd via The Orchard and Rough Trade, and he’s celebrating with the new single, ‘Off The Ring.’

Forget what you think you know about Garneau’s sound. While his previous work may have leaned into roadhouse dreampop, ‘Off The Ring’ is an invigorating pivot. It’s a track with driving bassline and airy, icy soundscapes, offering the perfect preview of the evolution found on the new LP.

Despite being a classic breakup song, Garneau has transformed the catharsis into something genuinely uplifting. “It’s about finding a bold freedom in letting that ending happen,” Garneau explains. “The production turned it into something I actually wanted to listen to, move to something that let the feeling move through me instead of keeping it stuck inside.”

Written in July 2024, the song feels like a fresh start, fusing that emotional release with a surprisingly compelling sound: sequenced beats, synth bass, and twangy guitars. Produced alongside Patrick Higgins (Zs, Nicolas Jaar) and mixed by Dan Marcellus (Lo Fang), the track carries a dusky, mesmerizing country-techno undercurrent.
