‘Paper Bag Princess’ by My Violence
My Violence is the nom de plume of Viennese chanteuse Silvia Ryder, formerly one half of the dreampop duo Sugarplum Fairies.
Known for their striking blend of Americana folk rock, lulling shoegaze, and pop sensibilities, echoes of Sugarplum Fairies can still be heard in Ryder’s solo work. But as My Violence, she carves out a darker, more enchanting space that is entirely her own.
Following her 2023 debut self-titled album ‘My Violence,’ the auteur returns with her sophomore effort, ‘Monday’s Child’ — a record inspired by the 19th-century English fortune-telling nursery rhyme and driven by Ryder’s signature evocative vocals. Alongside the album announcement comes the new track, ‘Paper Bag Princess,’ a melancholic piano ballad that Ryder describes as “based on a 1980s banned children’s book that reverses the princess-and-dragon stereotype.” Delivered in her hypnotic, whispered tone, My Violence invites listeners into a cinematic black-and-white world
‘Paper Bag Princess’ is out August 27 via Starfish Records.
