‘Danse Macabre’ in the In-Between: She’s Analog’s ‘No Longer, Not Yet’
Italian experimental trio She’s Analog has dropped their sophomore album, ‘No Longer, Not Yet,’ via Carton Records and Torto Editions. And with it comes a hypnotic visual for the single ‘Danse Macabre,’ directed by Lisa Consolini, that’s as arresting as the music itself.
The album’s core is captured by a quote from Tina Modotti in 1926: “I accept the tragic conflict between life continuously changing its form, and also immutably fixing it in time.” This isn’t just a mood board quote; it’s the very DNA of ‘No Longer, Not Yet.’ This isn’t just an album; it’s an “instant film,” a deliberate attempt to freeze the unfrozen, to find the beauty in the in-between. The title itself points to that elusive, fertile ground where everything is in flux, where creation blooms from the space between what was and what’s next. It’s a concept that transcends mere music, spilling into the very act of existing and creating, of shedding the past while leaning into the unknown.
For 40 minutes, She’s Analog crafts a sonic narrative of relentless, vital movement. Tapes and field recordings breathe life into tracks like ‘slow, kick,’ while transitions like ‘tangled’ are less bridges and more organic growths. Hints of lyrical drama in ‘narrow pass’ weave through the instability, creating a tension where at any moment, everything could collapse, halt, or surge forward.
‘No Longer, Not Yet’ is meticulous juxtaposition and sound collage, a process that fundamentally reshaped She’s Analog’s approach to composition. It’s an open dialogue between disparate sonic worlds, resulting in a broader form where sounds linger, echoing like an invisible thread connecting everything.
The album’s B-side is dedicated to the sprawling 18-minute piece ‘blu,’ a prime example of this transformative journey. It’s built on a stubborn percussive pulse, a foundation for sonic events to unfold and repeat, slowly morphing into something entirely new. The mellotron gradually emerges, suspending time, building anticipation, only for the initial guitar and percussion elements to return, not as a full circle, but as a circular form that hasn’t quite come home. The sounds and timbres are now scattered fragments, remnants that somehow feel like a brand new beginning.
Ultimately, ‘No Longer, Not Yet’ is a document of a sonic diary of their growth, always chasing that ineffable “little extra.”
