Cork five-piece Other Mother have shared a new single, ‘anymore’, ahead of their debut EP ‘Can’t Help But Feel Dramatic’, out October 8.

The band describe their music as ‘bubblegrunge’, a mix of alt-rock, synths, electronic textures and what they call feminine rage. ‘anymore’ comes from a much more personal place, written by vocalist Willow Esteve during a period when she was struggling with her health and with the way she saw her own body.

“I wrote ‘anymore’ during a time in my life where I was quite unwell and was on a lot of medications,” she explains. “It’s based on the feelings of disgust I had towards my body and my health at the time. It’s sad to look back and see how hard I was on myself; this song is a reminder to me to be kinder to me and my body.”

The song began, as much of the band’s material does, in the apartment shared by Willow, guitarist Fionn Cogan and keyboard player Bláthnaid Marsh. Willow often arrives with the first idea, while Fionn helps turn it into something they can bring to the rest of the group.

“I usually struggle with bringing the songs I write to life due to my lack of instrument skills, but Fionn is very good at understanding the sound I want to achieve while putting his spin on it,” Willow says. “It makes it easier when we meet up with the full band because we have an idea to bounce off. The parts that Bláthnaid, Cathal and Conor add make everything click into place and go in directions we wouldn’t have expected but add so much depth to the music.”

Other Mother first came together in Cork as a covers band, playing songs by artists including Radiohead, Fiona Apple and Honey Glaze before beginning to write their own material. Their current line-up is Willow Esteve on vocals, Fionn Cogan on guitar, Bláthnaid Marsh on keyboards and piano, Cathal O’Sullivan on bass and Conor O’Regan on drums.

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Wavefield Recordings, ‘anymore’ follows the band’s growing run of live shows around Ireland and arrives just a few weeks before ‘Can’t Help But Feel Dramatic’.
