Charlottetown four-piece Gizmo have shared ‘Walking The Floor’, the final single before their debut album ‘All Your Worships’, out October 2 through Victory Pool.

The song came fairly late in the writing of the record and gave frontman Julien Kitson a way into something he had previously found difficult: writing directly about his own life. “This was the second last song written for ‘All Your Worships’,” he says. “This song was a combination of attempting to translate life events into song as well as tipping my hat to country and western music.” The title comes from an old country phrase, and more specifically from Ernest Tubb’s ‘Walking the Floor Over You’. Kitson liked the way “walking the floor” had been used for decades as shorthand for heartbreak and restlessness, and wondered what would happen if he pushed that idea through a power-pop song.

“In my head, ‘Walking The Floor’ is a lyrical reimagining of that through a power pop-esque lens,” he says. “Early demos of this song were a Big Star attempt.” Country music also gave him a way to be more direct. “For a while, it was pretty difficult for me to write about real-life topics, but somehow paying homage to country and western music was my gateway to comfortability in that department.” Gizmo began in Charlottetown in 2021 and released their ‘Buddy System’ EP two years later. That record was largely written by Kitson, but ‘All Your Worships’ became much more of a group effort. Kitson, bassist Spencer Swaine, guitarist Patrick Stephen and drummer Daniel Hartinger spent several years working the songs out in rehearsal rooms and at shows. In February 2025 they took that same approach to a community hall in Great Village, Nova Scotia, where they recorded the album with Alex Edkins and Loel Campbell over eight days.

Kitson remembers trying to get somewhere near My Bloody Valentine, the Athens, Georgia bands of the 1980s and J Mascis during the sessions, then ending the day with Moosehead beer and records by Lilys, Polvo and early Bee Gees. Somehow, all of that ended up on the same album. The references across ‘All Your Worships’ are fairly broad, from Guided By Voices and Pavement to R.E.M. and Silver Jews, but the record does not sound like a checklist of influences. The songs were worked on together for long enough that the band’s own habits began to take over. That collaborative side is also heard in who gets to sing. Swaine takes the lead on ‘Crystal Palace’, while Stephen sings ‘Faulty Straight Edge Downfall’.

‘Walking The Floor’ sits near the end of the ten-track album, between ‘Crystal Palace’ and ‘Railway 2’, before the record eventually closes with ‘Pantone 312’.
