Anglo-Maltese quartet ĠENN have teamed up with Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap for ‘Jaguar Sun’, a new six-minute single released digitally and on 12” through Rock Action Records.

Leona Farrugia says she imagined the song as a duet almost from the start. Moffat was the person she had in mind, partly because his low, rough voice is so different from her own.

The pairing works for exactly that reason. Farrugia moves from quieter passages into a much stronger vocal, while Moffat comes in with his familiar spoken delivery. Neither sounds as though they are trying to meet in the middle. The song deals with free will and the uneasy thought that our lives may already be more fixed than we would like to believe. Moffat was interested in that idea too. He connected it with the “block universe” theory, where past, present and future are treated as parts of the same whole, and with the question of how much freedom we really have if everything is already there. The title comes from Italo Calvino’s unfinished ‘Under the Jaguar Sun’ project. ĠENN also point to Milan Kundera’s ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’, Alice Rohrwacher’s film ‘La Chimera’ and Low’s ‘Double Negative’ as references around the song. ‘Jaguar Sun’ was co-produced by ĠENN with Johnny Hostile, Johnny Breakwell and Tom Hill.

The track follows the band’s 2023 debut album ‘unum’ and 2024 release ‘Reverberations’. ĠENN are Janelle Borg on guitar, Sofia Rosa Cooper on drums, Leona Farrugia on vocals and Leanne Zammit on bass. They will spend October touring mainland Europe before returning to the UK for dates in Leeds, Norwich, Birkenhead, London, Brighton and Southampton during November.
