This Is The Deep Announce Debut Album, Share ‘I’m Making’

London collective This Is The Deep have announced their debut album, ‘Everything (Dick Herman, The Whale, and The End Of The Beginning)’, due for release on 11 November through 5dB Records.

The announcement arrives with ‘I’m Making’, a restless new single that moves between post-punk, chamber pop and psychedelia. Strings, harp, synthesiser, guitars and percussion pass through a series of abrupt rhythmic changes, while the song retains a strong melodic centre beneath its more unusual turns.

The track was self-produced by the band, with additional production from SHOLTO and Patrick Fitzroy, whose previous credits include Katy J Pearson and Sorry.

“‘I’m Making’ is a meditation on creativity, art and perception,” explains band leader Ranny Macdonald. “It explores the idea that everyday life is essentially an endless series of creative processes, where we make everything from conversations, journeys and spaces, and ultimately our own realities.”

Formed by Macdonald, a visual artist and musician, This Is The Deep brings together players from the UK, Brazil and Japan. The group’s music draws from orchestral folk, art rock, psychedelic pop and more traditional songwriting, while its visual identity incorporates painted scenery, animation and theatrical storytelling.

That wider world is central to ‘Everything’. The album follows Dick Herman, an employee of the fictional social media company Telepix, who falls asleep at his desk and begins dreaming of the sea. Led beneath the surface by a mysterious sun-god figure, he passes through distorted realities, jealous fantasies and melancholy dances before encountering a vast whale whose endless appetite eventually turns upon itself.

The story works as both a surreal adventure and a reflection on exploitation, consumption and the instability of perception. Rather than following a strict narrative, the album unfolds as a sequence of interconnected scenes in which modern life is filtered through dream logic, satire and strange maritime imagery.

The band plan to extend these ideas into their live performances, using sets, costumes, dancers and other theatrical elements to blur the division between concert and performance art.

‘Everything (Dick Herman, The Whale, and The End Of The Beginning)’ will be released on 11 November through 5dB Records. This Is The Deep will perform at Oslo in Hackney on 20 November.
