Joe Sparks Shares New Single And Video ‘Nice Little Refrain’ From Upcoming Album ‘Regina In Her Purple Coveralls Inside The Circle’
Joe Sparks has shared ‘Nice Little Refrain’, the first taste of his forthcoming LP ‘Regina In Her Purple Coveralls Inside The Circle’, out October 30.
A Berklee College of Music graduate, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer, Sparks wrote, recorded and produced the 12-track album himself, performing every instrument and sound on the record, with vocal accompaniment from Taylor Bowen on the opening track.
‘Nice Little Refrain’ is a sharp pop song that seems to know exactly what it’s doing while also poking fun at the whole business of writing a catchy tune. It’s bright and immediate, but there is more going on underneath: quick turns, busy rhythms, layered parts and a sense of someone pushing a simple idea until it starts behaving strangely.
The album is described as a genre-fluid independent release, moving between alternative rock, melodic pop, groove-led experimentation and more reflective songwriting. Across its 12 tracks, Sparks appears to be working with a broad palette, but the record is held together by hooks, rhythm and a clear sense of arrangement.
Alongside ‘Nice Little Refrain’, the album also includes ‘One With Everything’, ‘Miss Ya, Miss Alyssa’ and ‘Regina’, which serves as a personal and open-ended centrepiece. The full record moves through humour, emotional reflection, spiritual searching and release, with Sparks keeping direct control over the writing, playing and production.
‘Nice Little Refrain’ is out June 24. ‘Regina In Her Purple Coveralls Inside The Circle’ follows on October 30.
