The Fighting Side Tap Southern Gothic on ‘Sinner’
Upon the first few seconds, I’m immediately transported to the South, carried into a world that feels like I’m in old-time cotton fields, then hearing soul brought through a church.
This song conjures so much imagery and imagination, and would be perfect for a film. The modern production blends moody textures with an old-soul country blues feel, calling to mind a “meet me at the crossroads” energy with Howlin’ Wolf, with a touch of their own unique vibe. There’s something special about music that instantly transports you, a quiet kind of magic that not all songs have.
The Fighting Side hails from St. Louis, with roots in honky-tonk and rock & roll. At the core of the band are Brad Jackson (vocals) and Seth Barnhart (guitar), who have been writing together since childhood. The band has spent years on the road playing hundreds of shows, from busted vans to packed rooms to empty rooms, with rotating lineups, driven by a persistence that feels like there was never another option but to do music. This is a career band.
So many people overlook the power of self-belief, but you can feel that energy in this music. There’s an immediacy and command to it, an instant sense that this band has something to say. The name says it all: The Fighting Side, the result of that drive turned into something tangible, declaring, “we’re here, feel our presence, and you need to hear this.”
You can feel the weight of that journey in their latest single, “Sinner,” a song built on roads traveled, tested, and stories to tell. It weaves together classic country, Americana, Southern rock, and blues, with an undercurrent of punk spirit, felt in the sense of freedom, rawness, grit, and truth that comes through in Brad’s voice.
“This is a song about inevitability. It lives in that space between wanting to break cycles and realizing how hard it is to escape the patterns you were handed. There’s hope in it, but there’s also surrender. Seth wrote this song almost twenty years ago, and it hits just as hard now as it did then. We’re proud to finally put it out into the world.”

The band also features Marc Levitt (lead guitar), Merril Barden (drums), and Jon Weiss (bass), who recently joined and brings a new energy while honoring the foundation laid by longtime bassist Paul Johns.
Above all, The Fighting Side feels like a band that’s here to stay, and you can feel it.
