Ron Gallo Releases ‘checkmate’ Album, Shedding His Shield of Absurdity
Ron Gallo has released his new album, ‘checkmate,’ today, October 17th, via Kill Rock Stars.
The record marks a notable pivot, balancing a new level of vulnerability with the artist’s signature relatability. Gallo has often shielded sincerity with humour, but ‘checkmate’ is a deliberate decision to “stop hiding,” … emerging from behind the wall of absurdity and noise. The album began with just voice and guitar, and largely stayed true to that stripped-back approach. Gallo describes the work as an exercise in offering what the world needs right now: empathy, softness, and a reduced heart rate.
To coincide with the release, Gallo also shares the music video for the album’s second track, ‘Fantasy.’ The song explores how conceptual ideals often surpass reality, featuring a line that speaks to both loyalty and the concept of America: “it’s not too late, we’re not yet fucked, there is still somewhere left to run”. The track ties into the record’s core theme of committing fully to what remains genuine in an increasingly fleeting world.
Gallo notes the song’s sparse, simple final arrangement was a conscious move away from initial chaotic versions: “Less is more was the guideline for this whole record.” ‘Fantasy’ features drums from Eric Slick (Dr. Dog, Kevin Morby) and was co-produced and recorded by Jerry Bernhardt (Courtney Marie Andrews, Sam Evian).
