Mappe Of Unveils New Album ‘Afterglades’ with Final Track ‘A Scourge Laid Upon The Earth’
Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist Tom Meikle, known by his moniker Mappe Of, has announced his upcoming full-length album ‘Afterglades,’ set for release on September 19 through Paper Bag Records.
The album is a sweeping experimental blend of science fiction and folk, offering a powerful meditation on the end of the world and the emotional landscapes that come with facing it beside the people you love.
With the announcement, Meikle unveils the third single from the album titled ‘A Scourge Laid Upon The Earth.’ It follows earlier releases ‘Happiness in the Singularity’ and ‘Honeyhaze.’ Serving as the final chapter in the narrative of ‘Afterglades,’ ‘Scourge’ captures the cinematic gravity of a closing act in a survival epic. Through the story of a couple living out their last days in solitude at the edge of a broken world, the track builds with raw intensity, mystical undercurrents, and a fierce redemptive hope.
Meikle shares, “This was the last song I wrote for the record. It felt like there needed to be a sense of weight to this chapter of the story, there needed to be some chaos as a payoff for all of this reflection. This is in many ways the extinction level event. It needed to be heavy and raucous, retribution for all of our mistakes. It’s a bit of my dormant heavy metal energy emerging from me. It was an opportunity for me to revel in my frustration at our impact on the natural world. That’s a through line in a lot of what I do.”
The single arrives with a gripping live performance video recorded in a century-old converted church in Hamilton, Ontario. Directed by Cam Veitch and Black Lake and filmed at Catherine North Studios, the video showcases Meikle performing alongside a full band with electric guitars, synths, and violins enhancing the song’s visceral power.
