Savanna Ruth Shares ‘Everything We Made’ from ‘The Baseball Diaries’

Chicago singer-songwriter Savanna Ruth has shared ‘Everything We Made’, the latest track from ‘The Baseball Diaries’, her first album under the Savanna Ruth name, out October 23 via Easy Does It Records.

Savanna Ruth is the new chapter for Savanna Dickhut, who previously recorded as Burr Oak. After the more outward-looking storytelling of 2024’s ‘Annabelle’, ‘The Baseball Diaries’ turns back toward her own life, with songs written during the end of a long-term relationship and the changes that followed.

‘Everything We Made’ gets into the difficult part of looking back at a relationship that both people tried to save, even when the answer was already becoming clear. The music is bright and immediate, which makes the uncertainty underneath it hit a little harder.

“I didn’t want to make anyone the villain,” Ruth says. “I wanted to write from the perspective of someone (me or her) asking impossible questions, ‘Can we go back?’, while already knowing the answer.”

The song comes from Ruth’s experience of a relationship that became non-monogamous. She is careful not to treat that decision itself as the problem.

“I think some couples who decide to be in non-monogamous/polyamorous relationships do it successfully and it really works for them. It takes an extremely strong foundation of trust, rules and understanding. I think we genuinely wanted to try and do that in the beginning but it just was too hard, messy, and the relationship fell apart.”

For Ruth, what ultimately went wrong was simpler: both partners began falling for other people while their own relationship stopped getting the attention it needed.

‘The Baseball Diaries’ follows Ruth through that period of upheaval, touching on attachment, desire and trying to work out who you are once a future you had taken for granted disappears. It follows ‘Bad Thoughts’, the first song shared from the record.

The album was produced by Scott Lucas of Local H and Blake Smith, with John Agnello handling the mix. Agnello’s long list of credits includes Dinosaur Jr., The Breeders and Redd Kross.

There is a nice contrast at the heart of ‘Everything We Made’. It doesn’t sound weighed down by everything Ruth is describing. Instead, the song moves quickly, while the lyrics are still circling the questions that tend to remain after something important ends.
