La Démesure du pas: Redefining Sound in Motion with Musique Migratoire – Enregistrements Nomades

La Démesure du pas, the brainchild of artist and musician Matthieu Prual, pushes the boundaries of traditional music recording by embracing a fascinating, unconventional method—capturing the sound of instruments in motion.

Ahead of the highly anticipated release of their upcoming album ‘Musique Migratoire – Enregistrements Nomades,’ La Démesure du pas has shared an immersive video performance, directed by Thomas Rabillon. Filmed during a scenic walk along the banks of the Erdre in Nantes, France, as part of the À Ciel Ouvert festival organized by Pannonica, the video showcases the project’s innovative approach to live soundscapes.

La Démesure du pas delves into a rarely explored territory of phonographic art: recording instruments in transit. Following the creation of their unique “walking concert” concept in 2021, Prual and his collaborators embarked on an adventurous series of open-air recordings in the spring of 2023. The sessions moved fluidly between dynamic walking concerts and spontaneous explorations of acoustically rich environments, with performances ranging from solos to full quartets.

At the heart of this nomadic musical philosophy is the rhythm of footsteps, interwoven with breath and the expansive soundscape of the natural world. These recordings offer a deeper connection to place, not merely reproducing a live experience but creating a sonic journey through space and sound, where the vibrations of instruments meld with their surroundings.

‘Musique Migratoire — Enregistrements Nomades’ will be released on September 27, 2024, in multiple formats: CD, LP, digital, and a limited-edition run of 30 collector’s boxes, featuring nine art prints, an LP, and a download code. This release, via Ormo Records/Pagans and distributed by Kuroneko, invites listeners to embark on a one-of-a-kind auditory voyage.
