Helluvah’s ‘La nuit américaine’: A Cinematic Ode to Light and Reality
French artist and musician Camille W., widely recognized by her moniker Helluvah, has just unveiled ‘La nuit américaine,’ the lead single from her eagerly awaited album ‘Fire Architecture.’
Scheduled for release on October 25, 2024, ‘Fire Architecture’ will be available on CD and digital platforms via Dead Bees, Jarane, and Araki Records. The album’s lead single, ‘La nuit américaine,’ is accompanied by a music video directed by BobX. While the title nods to the famous film, its connection lies more in the setting—it was filmed in Nice, the city where Camille W. (Helluvah) grew up and whose unique light has deeply influenced her. The track explores the cinematic technique of simulating light, as well as the broader concept of faking reality and its portrayal. “The song is about that,” Helluvah comments, ”about the illusions you have or create in a love relationship, just as the film is about the making of cinema, illusions, life. It’s a track for which we also worked a lot on the sound ambiences, precisely to create a whole universe.”
“We were looking for a location that wasn’t necessarily identifiable, and a light that would be reminiscent of the cinematographic process,” Helluvah explains. “Superimpositions, a cottony atmosphere, working with light. BobX lives in the Jura region of France, and as we scoured the surrounding area, we spotted this antenna next to a kind of stone dome that, by being elevated, allowed us to have plenty of sky and be in a ‘neutral’ location.”
