Originating from central New Jersey, SOMA (Sacred Order of Mystic Apogees) is a collective of talented musicians who converge to create a diverse range of spiritual melodies. Comprising multi-instrumentalists, SOMA seamlessly blends meditative soundscapes with traditional Indian kirtan tunes and folk-inspired compositions. While rooted in tradition, SOMA injects their music with amplified instruments and innovative elements, resulting in a truly unique auditory experience. Their compositions weave a psychedelic tapestry of esoteric chants, dynamic beats, and heartfelt prayers.
‘Burning is Learning’ stands as a testament to SOMA’s deep reverence for every note, vibration, and sustained tone, honoring their lineage rooted in ancient sounds. The album offers a profound and immersive journey, oscillating between celebration and introspection. Drawing from their origins in New Jersey’s DIY hardcore punk and metal scenes, SOMA merges traditional instruments like the harmonium, tanpur, and mridanga with a contemporary heavy sensibility. Their live performances, much like their recordings, captivate audiences across diverse venues—from temples and churches to concert halls, bars, and even cremation grounds. Plans for future tours are already underway.
The album’s title, “Burning is Learning,” nods to the Sanatana Dharma belief that cremation facilitates the soul’s attainment of moksha, liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Recorded under the guidance of Phil Caivano (Monster Magnet) at Studio 13 and Shorefire Recording Studios, and mastered by John McBain (Monster Magnet, Wellwater Conspiracy, Desert Sessions), ‘Burning is Learning’ promises to be a transformative musical odyssey.
This eagerly awaited album will be released in a limited edition vinyl pressing of 200 copies, alongside its digital availability. The official release date scheduled for March 19, 2024, coinciding with the Spring Equinox.
