‘Fermented Reality’ by Boštjan Simon | Album Premiere
Exclusive album premiere of ‘Fermented Reality’ by Boštjan Simon, out today via Nature Scene Records.
Boštjan Simon (saxophone / electronics) is known for his work in electroacoustic groups Etceteral (Glitterbeat), Velkro (Clean Feed), Trus! (Moonlee / Radio Študent) and the duo with the percussionist Zlatko Kaučič (Jazz Cerkno Records).

His debut solo album ‘Fermented Reality’ delves into the mix of acoustic and electronic sounds from saxophone and modular synthesizer. Boštjan Simon takes Jackie McLean’s statement “Saxophone is a drum” and brings it to the fore by celebrating the percussive aspect of the saxophone. The key clanks of the instrument are amplified to the point of sonic feedback and processed by external effects. The instrument is modified with sensors to enable triggering of the oscillators in his modular system with a new experimental interactive module Octosense.
There is an interplay from combining these different possibilities and exploring the electroacoustic coupling/decoupling of heterogeneous sounds.
“There is some truth in the notion that we do not have access to ‘basic’ reality. Everything we perceive is tailored to our understanding of the environment by processes hidden to our eyes. It is amazing therefore, that we can function and adapt in this fermented reality without fully understanding how, if we only make up a purpose. In this album I’m fermenting the saxophone’s sound in different ways for the sake of play and clarity, results may vary.” – Boštjan Simon
