Bob Hund | Interview | New Album

Eccentric indie rockers bob hund are on the roll, recently releasing new material via Adrian Recordings.

bob hund’s 13th album is released in two parts. First up was the A-side ‘DRÖMMEN ÄR EN RÅVARA’ followed by ‘VERKLIGHETEN ÄR EN RAFFINERAD PRODUKT’. bob hund was originally formed in 1991 by Jonas Jonasson on keyboards and Thomas Öberg on vocals after meeting in high school. The band’s line-up was finished with the arrival of Conny Nimmersjö and Johnny Essing on guitar, Mats Hellqvist on bass and Mats Andersson on drums.

bob hund’s very first records were recorded in the legendary Tambourine Studios in Malmö together with Per Sunding from Eggstone, now, bob hund has once again stepped over the threshold of the old brick building. The songs on the record have taken detours and wandered around for quite a while before they finally got their perfect form. Some songs stretch far back in time, other seeds were sown very recently. “Some tunes have now changed so much that even their mother wouldn’t recognize them today.” says Thomas. It’s a patchwork. However, the process has borne the fruit that the songs are filled with little surprises, secrets and tidbits that you only discover little by little. It is a wonderful, exciting and unique realm to step into, even for a die-hard bob hund fan. As always, it will be up to bob hund’s responsive audience to fill both lyrics and music with content, but the band imagines that the album has a red and white thread to follow both up and down, like on a polka dot.

“In the beginning there were a lot of Pixies, Kraftwerk and The Velvet Underground”

The band has been going on for many years now. There are only a few bands that can go for so long without losing their wave of inspiration, how do you do it? Where does your inspiration come from?

When we met we were just six outcasts with no direction. The inspiration came after we had become friends and started to listen to music together.

Would you say your influences changed during the years of being an active musician?

Yes, of course. In the beginning there were a lot of Pixies, Kraftwerk and The Velvet Underground. Nowadays it can be anything at all. A bird, a blue house or maybe someone who shows you a new dance!

Would love it if you could tell us about the new album and its creation.

We took material from a kind of Psychedelic “musical” we wrote two years ago. Then we called our first producer, Per Sunding, and asked him If he wanted to work with the material. Simple as that.

What about the approach to songwriting? Is it still the same or is it ever-evolving?

It’s almost as it always has been. Six guys come running with bits and parts and then start building the next shed…

Would you like to discuss the album making of ‘0-100’?

I can’t really remember so much of it, but a couple of the tracks were recorded in a studio at an Italian wine-producer, haha. There are some nice songs in there!

“A lot of the music actually was written during soundcheck”

I first got to know your band after hearing your second album, ‘Omslag: Martin Kann’. Would you mind discussing the first three albums? What are some of the recollections from working on those three incredible albums?

Those were crazy days. We did a lot of touring between the recordings so it’s a wonder we did find time for it. A lot of the music actually was written during soundcheck! But it was wonderful.

How was the tour so far?

We have been touring this Winter with a play about the start and the unreal truth about our band. With our own music of course! Went really well.

What’s next for you?

We recently released the B-side of our new album. Looking forward to that! Our festival-summer started June 2.

Let’s end this interview with some of your favourite albums.

Yes, of course but no time for that now. But we can offer you an old recipe!
1/3 of Kraftwerk, ‘Computer World’
1/3 of Cramps, ‘Psychedelic Jungle’
1/3 of Pixies, ‘Surfer Rosa’

Throw it in a pan and boil gently. There you go: bob hund!
