‘Dusk Among the Plum Trees’ by Trevor Sloan | Album Premiere

Exclusive album premiere of ‘Dusk Among the Plum Trees’ by Trevor Sloan, out April 14th, 2023.

Trevor Sloan is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Toronto. Described as “slyly intricate with ethereal touches,” his music infuses intimate vocals with acoustic instruments and old synths. He hints at singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s but with an intriguingly modern twist. Full of artful symbolism and mindful contemplation, his songs are often balanced with images from everyday life. ‘Dusk Among the Plum Trees’ is his fifth album.

Never far from gentle fingerpicking or an introspective thought, ‘Dusk Among the Plum Trees’ mixes breezy indie-pop and mellow folk, with undercurrents of analog synth. The album opens with the wistful ‘Ottawa 1977,’ steeped in tones from that decade. ‘Grey Days of April’ introduces a darker mood with a bluesy acoustic riff and a driving kick drum.

‘From Sun to Moon’ reveals a quieter and more stripped-down sound. These different styles and timbres are threaded through the tapestry of the collection.

“Last winter, my friend was talking about his family’s plum trees and the process of making homemade brandy. I had this picture in my mind of a dusky sky above plum trees. I had also been reading a lot of Japanese poetry, which often references plum trees, so I think that was also part of the inspiration. I recorded the album over a year ago. I mostly used acoustic guitars, vintage synths, pianos and orchestral sounds. Then the music was mixed and mastered by Andy Magoffin (Great Lake Swimmers, The Hidden Cameras).”
