‘Wist/Mist’ by Vireo | New Album, ‘Moss Longing’

Exclusive track premiere of ‘Wist/Mist’ by Vireo, taken from the upcoming album, ‘Moss Longing’, out August 19th.

Vireo is a ramshackle folk project from Pittsburgh, PA led by Chris Beaulieu. With a sound that merges high energy, choral vocals with the almost-haunting echoes of a forest landscape, Vireo’s second single ‘Wist/Mist’ off their upcoming album, ‘Moss Longing’, provides its listener with an opportunity to feel both grounded in a concrete reality and swept away into an untouched terrain.

‘Wist/Mist’ presents two converging concepts: feeling trapped in an everyday routine, “working just to eat / eating just to work again”, and feelings of escapism; going elsewhere, anywhere, in search of motivation to continue. Layers of percussion sui generis— hamboning, slaps of water, and Udu drum— work in tandem with the bright vocals of featured artists Laurel Wain, Jacob Ryave, and trumpet accompaniment by Ian Compton, to create a musical environment all its own. ‘Wist/Mist’, in many ways, feels like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater (a familiar reference for those in Western PA), its unique structure built into, but not interrupting, the surrounding forests, a complex exploration of human conflict nestled seamlessly within a dense, natural landscape.
