The New Boyfriends
The New Boyfriends is the Finnish harsh junk noise duo of Vilho (Aprapat) and Veikko (Mogao).

How did you get to know each other?
Vilho and Veikko: We’ve been friends for a long time and come both from the same relatively small city, interested in all kinds of music, so like minded people usually gravitate towards each other.
Why did you decide to start The New Boyfriends?
We both had just started a solo noise project that are fairly different, (Veikko as Mogao and Vilho as Aprapat), so we had an idea to collaborate and combine our approach on noise.
Why did you decide to make harsh junk noise?
It just felt natural.
When did you start this project? About two years ago?
We started the project at the end of 2019, early Winter.
What do the both of you have in common? And what are the differences between you two?
Aprapat is more leaning towards junk noise while Mogao is more “traditional” pedal harsh noise.
The New Boyfriends is a funny name, your album covers are funny too. Is humor an important part of what you do?
Humor is very important but we are dead serious about harsh noise.
Is The New Boyfriends a recording project only or do you do this live too?
It’s a recording project so far, but we have talked about taking it to the stage.
How do you make your music? Metal junk, contact microphones and effect pedals?
We gather a pile of various junk objects and mic the room with a couple of microphones which go straight to an analog 4-tracker. We also have an amplifier for the pedal chain that is spiced up with contact mic’d scrap metal. Then we let things happen. Our recordings are mostly live and our approach is free improvisation.
Who do you see as your influences? Incapacitants? The Haters?
We don’t think about any influences when coming up with the noise, and it’s a sum of many things as we listen to noise and all kinds of music a lot. But obviously the scrap metal approach of The New Blockaders and the joyous output of Incapacitans have affected us a lot. On top of that, free jazz is very important.
Are you part of a Finnish harsh noise scene?
We are the scene.
