‘Octavius’ by Oats | EP premiere

Exclusive EP premiere of ‘Octavius’ by Oats, a whooshy psychedelic project, out April 10th.

Following the release of the two dreamy folk-inspired singles ‘Green People & “Mad Hatter’, ‘Octavius’ sees Oats take a drastic change from his previous heavier releases, to a much more acoustic-driven sound. With the songs having a sense of melancholy, it comes as no surprise they were written during ill health and recorded in his bedroom set up shortly after recovering.

The woozy finger-picked guitars and watery samples featured throughout the record paint the picture of Oats being lost at sea with nothing but his acoustic guitar. Its opener ‘Bee Balcony’ starts with an improvisational guitar piece that sounds as if the strings are being played with everything they’ve got.

At first, its meditative guitar line puts your mind at ease and compliments the reverb-drenched noises droning in the back. But then things start to get unhinged as the guitars begin to sound more demented and the liquidy samples (which sound like they were created by sea creatures) increase in volume. All continues to build until the song bursts to life with its psychedelic pop sway, and sets the tone for the rest of the tune.

‘Octavius’ flows steadily downstream from this point on, with its warped pitched guitars and whispery vocals guiding listeners through each song. A disorientating yet blissful glimpse into the otherworldly world of Oats.
