Einseinseins | Interview | New Album, ‘Zwei’

Neo-kraut rock trio Einseinseins recently released their new album ‘Zwei’ via Tonzonen Records.

‘Zwei’ is the heartbeat of digital globalization. A current that opposes the ever-same. The opium for the society whose life is constructed from ones and zeros. Einseinseins have discovered their voices on this album. They use pop as an instrument of critical reflection. The album awakens an obsessive desire of the one, the two. They are never too shy to use big melodies thrown energetically into the world. The album moves outside the concept of genres. A concept that is deliberately misunderstood by Einseinseins. No two pieces are alike and yet everything is one.

After the destruction of their planet ‘ĬİĨ’ by exploitation of resources and wars, Einseinseins found shelter on the blue planet earth after a long journey. There they lived covertly underground for years, adopting the appearance, customs and peculiarities of the earthlings. However, they soon discovered that countless disturbances – caused by human activity – threaten the balance of the earth. Therefore, Einseinseins use the medium of music to broadcast their cosmic sounds to the far reaches of the universe and make contact with possible survivors of their home planet. Their coded sound waves serve to change human behavior in order to avert an impending apocalypse. They bring peace!

“Our coded sound waves serve to change human behavior “

Would you like to talk a bit about your background?

We met playing in a raw funk soul band years ago. We had been playing in different bands together ever since. In 2015, the three of us started jamming together and we recorded everything. Suddenly we had hours of music material and it felt natural to start a new band together. We released a demo tape and started playing shows. In 2016 we were invited to play PsyKa Festival, this gave us the final push to take it more seriously and we recorded our first album ‘ĬİĨ’.

What was the original concept behind the formation of Einseineins?

After the destruction of our planet ĬİĨ by exploitation of resources and wars, we found shelter on the blue planet Earth after a long journey. We lived covertly underground for years, adopting the appearance, customs and peculiarities of the Earthlings. However, we soon discovered that countless disturbances – caused by human activity – threaten the balance of the Earth. Therefore, we use the medium of music to broadcast our cosmic sounds to the far reaches of the universe and make contact with possible survivors of our home planet. Our coded sound waves serve to change human behavior in order to avert an impending apocalypse. We bring peace!

Do you feel that your sound is characterized directly by Neu! and other minimalistic acts or do you feel that you’re absorbing all kinds of influences?

Neu! Is just one influence among many, I guess. We listen to tons of different stuff. And we keep messing around a lot. Sometimes it’s hard to say what influenced us the most. It feels like our latest album ‘Zwei’ is as much influenced by Neu! as it is by Madonna or Peter Gabriel.

You have a brand new album out, ‘Zwei’. What’s the story behind the recorded material?

Honestly, it’s just songs we wrote after we finished ‘ĬİĨ’. It took us a while to get the songs done and record them properly. And we got a little lost in the process. I guess that’s what happens if you do it by yourself. You got all the time in the world. Lucky for us, Tonzonen Records wanted to release ‘Zwei’, so we had some kind of pressure. We are very happy about that. Dirk and Ray are doing great work and are very nice people. We could not ask for more.

Would you like to share some further words about the recording process?

We recorded everything by ourselves in our rehearsal room. So we took our time and tried different things. This way we could listen to details and rearrange certain parts. Sometimes it is hard to tell if a song really works by just playing it. The devil is in the details. We got some help during mixing, but Niels basically did it all by himself. The rest of us gave stupid advices like more guitar or more drums please.

Would you be able to draw parallels with your debut album, ‘ĬİĨ’?

The songwriting process was basically the same. Every song came to life during jams. So I would say it is very similar to our debut album. We just focused more on synthesizers and on the sequencer. What is different though, we started using vocoder as an additional sound more frequently. I wouldn’t call it singing but additional noise.

“It’s like reading Naked Lunch where you don’t understand the plot at all”

If I understand correctly, your albums works like a chapters in a novel; after the destruction of their planet ĬİĨ by exploitation of resources and wars, you found shelter on the blue planet earth after a long journey.

We’ve got a loose origin story, because we don’t want to blow people’s minds. You know, David Bowie was right about the Starman. Most titles are basically working titles which stick. Because of the loose concept you could say it’s like a novel. It’s like reading Naked Lunch where you don’t understand the plot at all.

What are some future plans?

Playing shows and touring would be great. We miss playing shows a lot. Currently, we are working on some new songs now and might start recording soon, so it doesn’t take another 6 years till the next record will be released.

Let’s end this interview with some of your favourite albums. Have you found something new lately you would like to recommend to our readers?

I really enjoy Jeff Parker’s ‘Forfolks’ record at the moment.

Thank you for taking your time. Last word is yours.

Hey, thanks for having us. Thanks to everyone who got our record. We are overwhelmed by the positive feedback. And of course a big thank you to Tonzonen Records!
