“It immerses you in the dark side of life”

About ‘Black Velvet Deathbed’:

The song is about the tragic death of an dillusional old fortune teller, who lived inside an golden fortune teller machine. I wrote this song after watching the tv series Carnivàle. The whole freaky vibe from that show was at some point the root of inspiration for a couple songs, and ‘Black Velvet Deathbed’ is one of them. Pieter Hendriks

Video was made by Ruben Aldenhoven.

Soothsayer Orchestra is Pieter Hendriks. Pieter was born and raised in the early 80’s in a small town in the south of The Netherlands. At a very young age he got introduced to music and playing instruments by his parents. Here he got hooked on a wide variety of music genres. In the early 90’s the big city called and introduced Pieter to different music and new horizons. Freeing him from the tunnel visions of living in a small town. Soon after at the age of 15, Pieter started touring in various punk and hardcore bands across the globe. Long drives in shitty vans to play in squats in forgotten towns in faraway countries was a reality check and shaped character. Years of touring the world he moved to Eindhoven. This culminated in 2015 in setting up a home studio. Where he started recording songs by himself, without plan or clear vision. Out of these recordings Soothsayer Orchestra was born.

Pieter is a musical solitudinarian who has enough gumption to leave the commonplace behind and only take with him what can enrich his music and performance. There is a certain weight of tragedy in his music. His gravelly voice possesses sometimes an uneasy moodiness that reflects doom and despair. It immerses you in the dark side of life. Then, amidst this darkness Soothsayer compositions shift to newfound hope. Warm and flowing, creating a longing, yet bold mood. Especially in a live performance, with the backing of a band who got their routine down, Pieter Hendriks songs come to peak dramatically.

Most of the lyrics and song ideas were written in an old caravan in the middle of the dark forest of the Eifel in Germany. Pieter isolated himself there without a phone and television. Just loneliness and silence to focus on his songs.
