‘Dreaming Awake’ by Highest Sea

Highest Sea takes us on a journey under the burning sun and into the night, carried on a wave of melancholic and solar dream pop. Behind the name is songwriter Leïla Zanzibar, whose raw and mystical vocals tell bewitching stories about haunted hearts guided by the call of the sea.

Leïla’s main influences range from The Velvet Underground to Bob Dylan and Jeff Buckley, with Beach House, Atlas Sound or Lower Dens making their marks along the way.

French-Berliner Zanzibar came to Berlin from Nice via Paris to fulfill her need to explore herself and her art in the city she had fallen in love with as a young adult, fascinated by this playground for the free spirits. She released her debut EP Haunted Hearts in 2017 and her band has evolved from a duo into a four-piece over the years, featuring Theo Taylor on drums since 2016, Andreas Miranda on bass and Cristobal Jimenez van Cauwelaert on lead guitar.

About the new Single, Leïla explains: “‘Dreaming Awake’ is a celebration of the joy and lightness of summer, with the sensation building and expanding to a final crescendo. I wanted the rhythm to evoke the feeling of being sat at the window of an express train or a fast car, watching the fleeting, sun-flooded coastal landscape. It’s also a song about our ability to find solace and strength by diving into our memories.

“‘Dreaming Awake’ was co-written with producer Joe Kelly in collaboration with drummer Theo Taylor and Tamar Weiss, who improvised the dreamy backing vocals.”
