Savanna Ruth Shares ‘Queen’s Gambit’ | ‘The Baseball Diaries’ Out October 23
Chicago songwriter Savanna Ruth has shared ‘Queen’s Gambit’, another song from her forthcoming debut album ‘The Baseball Diaries’, out October 23 via Easy Does It Records.
We last heard from Savanna Ruth a few weeks ago with ‘In Your Orbit’. Her new single ‘Queen’s Gambit’ comes from a rather different place, written while she was trying to keep up with grad school, music and the general uncertainty of figuring out what comes next.
“‘Queen’s Gambit’ is basically me trying to make peace with not having my life completely figured out,” Ruth says. “The phrase ‘take it all in stride’ became this reminder to give myself some time and trust that I was going to be okay.”
The title has a nice story of its own. Ruth watched ‘The Queen’s Gambit’, became fascinated with chess, taught herself how to play and eventually ended up running a chess club at the elementary school where she worked. Something that had casually found its way into a song ended up becoming part of her everyday life.
Musically, ‘Queen’s Gambit’ is one of the more immediate songs we have heard from the album so far, with a little country creeping into its indie rock edges.
‘The Baseball Diaries’ will be Ruth’s first album under her own name after previously recording as Burr Oak. It was produced by Scott Lucas of Local H and Blake Smith, with John Agnello mixing.
The album arrives October 23 through Easy Does It Records. Ruth will mark its release that same night with a show at Color Club in Chicago.
