ALICE NOT JOHN
Episode 28: A Fictional Radio Transmission
Guest: CJ Bolland
Host: Joeri Bruyninckx

A conversation I overheard in a record store:

Customer: “Do you have Coltrane?”
Record shop owner: “In the jazz section.”
Customer: “I mean Alice, not John.”
Record shop owner: “In the jazz section.”

What was your favorite song as a child?

There are of course many songs but the one that stood out most was Jean Michel Jarre – Oxygene 4. I was a young child when I saw him perform it on tv and my mum went straight to the record store and bought it for me.

Which song do you sing most often in the shower?

Mostly I hum because most of my favourite music is instrumental but when I do sing it’s most likely some Elvis Presley like ‘Devil in disguise’

What was your favorite song as a teenager?

Again many choices but the song I spent the most time tracking down (I didn’t know the title and there was no internet or Shazam) was Newcleus – Automan. When I finally found it I played that record like 30 times a day. Some years later it was sampled by ‘Snap’ to make the song ‘Rhythm is a dancer’ but the original is several million times better!

Which song do you associate with your adolescence?

The Neon Judgement – The fashion party , not only is it a legendary Belgian Cold wave masterpiece it also states quite clearly ’the fashion party is over!’, which was a statement that rang home for us wavers rebelling against the mainstream.

Which song do you know the lyrics to by heart?

I know many songs by heart as I’m a native English speaker but anything by Depeche mode I can sing along as they often write about themes close to my heart like the song ‘Walking in my shoes’. I love the phrase ‘if you try walking in my shoes, you stumble in my footsteps’

Which song makes you feel better when you’re feeling down?

I don’t often feel down, luckilly but when I do anything by The Shadows will lift my spirit back where it belongs. ‘Wonderful land’ being a prime example

Name a song people wouldn’t think you would like.

I don’t have any guilty pleasures as I don’t feel guilty about music I like. Because I’m generally more dedicated to the underground scene I imagine some people could be surprised when I like something broad and more commercial. Even though that is rare ,sometimes a song breaks through that hits the spot, for instance ‘Guru Josh’ – Infinity (the original 1990 mix, not the silly remixes of 2008)

Name a song you think people should listen to if you think they don’t know it yet.

I’m going to have to blow my own trumpet here. My favourite Magnus track , ‘Assault on Magnus’, was never a single so people, especially abroad, may have missed it and it really deserves a listen or two

Which song brings out silly dance moves in you?

All tracks by Aphex Twin, Plaid and Autechre get me doing full on silly moves but if the moves feel good are they still silly?

Which song do you quote most often? Which line?

Depeche Mode – ‘Get the Balance Right’ is a song I quote mostly to myself to remember to steer clear of any extremes and stay on the straight path. Favourite part:

Be responsible respectable
Stable but gullible
Concerned and caring
Help the helpless
But always remain
Ultimately selfish
