Morrison Graves: Post-Psych, Eastern Influences, and ‘The Swarm’ on the New EP, ‘Under The Weight of Gravity’
Portland’s Morrison Graves could be described as post-psychedelia…at least that comes to mind when hearing ‘The Swarm’.
Their sound is a fuzzy convergence of ’60s psych, indie rock, and influences coming from the East. After their pandemic debut, ‘Division Rising,’ tackled local blight, the band’s new EP, ‘Under The Weight of Gravity,’ explodes onto the global stage. It’s a record that replies to the shattered reality of the post-pandemic era, addressing themes of tribalism, resource depletion, and the war machine.
The EP’s lead single, ‘The Swarm,’ is a devastating narrative confined to three minutes of sound that sets the vibe for the whole EP. It tracks a woman’s awakening after a blast in a war zone, discovering her family deceased. The song builds from shock to an incandescent rage. It is the sound of loss and fury…a question posed to the “locusts” preying on human despair. This is Morrison Graves channeling collective dread into cathartic rock.
