‘Floating Islands’ by Jalayan | New Album

Jalayan is a musical project inspired by ancient people’s mythology. The musical proposal can be described as a mix of progressive rock, psychedelic, ethical and electronic music. The group was born in 2017 near Milan (Italy) and is made of professional musicians. During 2019 the band played some concerts in Italy. Musical technologies used for the live show are up to date. The musical show is matched with an exclusive visual show too.
In 2020 the first album ‘Sonic Drive’ was released on web and CD through Atomic Records. On May 7th, the new album ‘Floating Islands’ was released on CD through Sound Effect Records, on vinyl through Adansonia Records and on the web through (R)esisto Distribuzione.
The origin of Jalayan name can be traced back to our passion for mythology, history, archeology and, specifically, for the “ancient astronauts theory” (the theory, supported by authors like Von Daniken, Kolosimo, Sitchin, Hancock, Biglino, that assume that there was a contact between extraterrestrial civilizations and ancient human civilizations). The name “Jalayan” come from afar, and more precisely from Vedic Civilization, which had developed in the area between India and Pakistan between 2000 b.C. and 1000 b.C. and named in this way because it originated the “Vedas” (ancient collection in Sanskrit of sacred texts forerunner of Hinduism). In the “Vedas”, like in other Indian following religious texts, are repeatedly descripted the “Vimanas” (flying objects used by deities for travels and battles). “Jalayan” is a kind of “Vimanas” described as a vehicle designed to move in air and water and can be imagined as a heavenly boat, a spaceship.
“Jalayan” means to bring the listener from the earthly world to the sky, to transcend the material reality and elevate to a spiritual dimension. “If we should define our music, we would describe it as a mix of progressive rock, electronic and folkloric music that follow the the tradition of musicians like Gong, Steve Hillage and Ozric Tentacles. More than looking at a specific genre, we like to think our music is psychedelic, that is able to reveal to the listener his own soul experimenting with an expansion of consciousness, an alteration of reality perception, a sense of profound communion with the universe. The project was created to answer, in the first place, to an expressive and communicative need and, in the second place, to give finished form to an idea that was synthesis of different musical and cultural references”.
‘Floating Islands’ means that our planet, like any other celestial body, is a simple island that floats in the endless sea of the universe and so we have to love and respect it because it is our only and fragile home. This new album resumes and develops the work yet done in the previous ‘Sonic Drive’. The band proposes a solid progressive space rock soaked in electronic and folkloric elements. The eight instrumentals have been composed and arranged between 2019 and 2021 by Alessio Malatesta, band leader and founding member. The line-up is composed, in addition to Malatesta on keyboards and synthesizers, by Vincenzo Calvano on electric and acoustic guitars, Matteo Prina on electric bass and Martino Malacrida on drums. Recordings, as well as mixing and mastering, has been realized during 2021 by Alessio Malatesta at “Bad Head Studios”. Album graphic is the work of Matteo “Hemlock” Spadaro.
