Yeah I was wondering about that,it’s not typical for him either it seems,I just bought a copy, and am listening to it right now, sounding great, first copy I’ve seen in a while too.
Great record, and good review. But there's one thing worth mentioning: this is one of the most STONED records ever made. Not tripping, not nodding, just straight-up wasted on cannabis. All the musicians play like they're so baked that they can barely move. Stone Flute: the aural equivalent of couch-lock.
Who plays keyboards on this album? I definitely hear some organ & maybe electric piano.
Likely Roy Ayers – although he is only credited with Vibes. Good Ear.
Or maybe Herbie himself? I mean, there are vibes going on in the background while the piano plays in the “Paradise” part of the first song. I find it unusual that bandleaders don’t know piano. Also, though multi-tracking particular artists was not unheard of at this time, there are other instances on the album when piano, electric piano, and organ are heard alongside vibes–and sometimes while no flute is playing! It’s probably just Chick or the producer or engineer or something. No big deal, but I do dislike uncredited musicianship in the liner notes.
AI come up with : Bobby Emmons organ and Bobby Wood electric piano. This album is fantastic. Just listening now.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
Bobby Emmons: Played the organ.
Bobby Wood: Played the electric piano.
Ron Carter: Played double bass, and possibly also piano, though not definitively credited.
Roy Ayers: Played the vibraphone.
String Quartet: There is a string quartet on the album, though their specific members are not listed.
Herbie Mann: Played flute and produced the album.
Be warned this is not freaky-guitar Sonny Sharrock. He just strums and picks obediently, beautifully, I should add.
