Blue Herring Release Self-Titled Debut Album
Toronto trio Blue Herring have released their self-titled debut album through Wake Robin Records.
The ten-track record mixes garage rock, psychedelia, blues and folk-rock influences, with a limited edition of 100 hand-stamped CDs also available. Blue Herring are Eloise Harrington on bass and vocals, Owen Lewthwaite on guitar and Jack McCartney on drums. All three grew up in Toronto’s east end, but didn’t meet until their university years in London, Ontario. Harrington and Lewthwaite were studying music production at Western University, where they got to know McCartney, who was often hanging around the department’s lounge. They soon discovered a shared love of psychedelic and blues rock, particularly Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan. Harrington even credits Dylan with influencing her singing, recalling, “I ruined my voice trying to sing like Bob as a teenager.”
The album opens with ‘Gears’, a fast, post-punk-leaning track, and closes with ‘Depend On’, which takes things in a slower, folk-rock direction. Harrington’s lyrics deal with frustration, loneliness and growing up in a world where there’s rarely a moment of quiet. The guitars are often loose and bluesy, with Lewthwaite’s playing taking up plenty of space. The record was produced, mixed and mastered by Callum Foxcroft.
Wake Robin Records has also prepared a limited run of 100 CDs. Jiah Carron and their father designed and engraved the stamps used for the discs, with each copy stamped by hand.
