The Mellons Ditch the Monochrome on ‘In Color’

This is one of those Mellon’s tracks that just sat in the vault for years. It started as a quick demo. Now, finished by Andrew and Denney, it hits hard.

The song tears down the rigid, black-and-white world most of us grew up in, and they pull off a massive bait-and-switch to do it.

The verses have this nasty, gum-snapping thing. Think the Shangri-Las or the Ronettes but with a bit more bite. Ian lays down a deep Motown groove right underneath a harpsichord. It sounds completely out of time in the best way.

Then the chorus hits and the whole thing explodes. The claustrophobia drops away. You are drowning in technicolor. Instead of just complaining about dogmatic thinkers, the band throws their arms open. They invite those same people to step out of their echo chambers and see the actual nuance in the world.

To pull this off, the band ditches the girl-group grit and moves straight into massive ensemble pop. You get these wild, Cowsills-style harmonies piled on top of each other, while the Mellons bring their usual orchestral sweep to the mix. It feels like stepping out of a dark room into the blinding sun. Dizzying. A little terrifying. Beautiful.
