ALICE NOT JOHN Episode 16: A Fictional Radio Transmission Guest: Lester Michiels (Uphill Sound)

ALICE NOT JOHN
Episode 15: A Fictional Radio Transmission
Guest: Lester Michiels (Uphill Sound)
Host: Joeri Bruyninckx

A conversation I overheard in a record store:

Customer: “Do you have Coltrane?”
Record shop owner: “In the jazz section.”
Customer: “I mean Alice, not John.”
Record shop owner: “In the jazz section.”

ALICE NOT JOHN is the name of a fictional radio show. The idea is this: for every episode, I ask a musician the same questions. The answers I receive are the “playlist” of my fictional radio show. The questions are these:

What song do you associate with your childhood?

Billy Ocean – ‘Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car’

What’s your favorite shower sing-along song?

Uton Green – ‘Can’t Take’

What was your favorite song as a teenager?

Snoop Dogg – ‘Gin & Juice’

Name a song you didn’t like when you first heard it but love now.

Fleetwood Mac – ‘Go Your Own Way’

What song do you associate with your adolescence?

Cypress Hill – ‘Insane in the Brain’

What song do you know the lyrics to by heart?

I know about half of every reggae/dancehall song from 1980 to 2010 by heart. But I don’t know a single one completely from start to finish.

What song makes you feel better when you’re feeling down?

Horace Andy & Earl Flute – ‘Don’t Think About Me’

Name a song people wouldn’t think you’d like.

Ultimate Kaos – ‘Casanova’

Can you name a song you think people should listen to, if they don’t know it yet?

Horace Andy & Earl Flute – ‘Don’t Think About Me’ (with the bass turned up to +4!)

‘Wonderful Tonight’ by Eric Clapton is actually a breakup song. It’s about a couple who have decided to split, but don’t want to ruin the party they’re going to by telling anyone yet. Strangely enough, it’s often chosen as the first dance at weddings. Tell me about a song you misunderstood the first time you heard it.

Bob Marley – ‘No Woman, No Cry’

Which song brings out silly dance moves in you?

Dub reggae in general — though it’s hard to name a specific track. I just don’t know enough about it.

Which song do you quote most often? Which line?

Uton Green – ‘Can’t Take’: “Can’t take, can’t take the ratatata blam blam, Uphill dem a go kill another jumpan.”
That line comes from a serialized dubplate recording for my reggae sound system, Uphill Sound.
