‘Astor Place’: Edward Rogers’ ‘Romeo’ and the Ghost of Phil Lynott

‘Romeo’ opens like a journal entry whispered beneath the streetlamps of the East Village, where Edward Rogers now shapes sound with a poet’s ear and a wanderer’s memory.

In this first glimpse from ‘Astor Place,’ Rogers draws a quiet line between himself and Phil Lynott. Clearly a big fan, this track gives a recognition of a shared spirit. Lynott, like Rogers, understood the demands of performance and the pull of inner truth. Rogers’ ‘Romeo’ could be seen as a glimpse of the man behind the music… “‘Romeo’ is a tribute to Phil Lynott – especially his solo albums” says Rogers. He continues, “Phil Lynott came off as a rocker and bit of a Romeo himself; but his solo work displayed the more sensitive side to him, which I really liked. He also had his own style of phrasing that could go from edgy to soft; very unique.”

There’s an understated elegance to Rogers’ delivery. ‘Romeo’ simply unfolds, carried by the grounded tone of a voice that’s seen a lot, from Birmingham’s bleak streets to lower Manhattan’s local arts crowd. Don Fleming’s production keeps it at bay, allowing the song to unfold at its own pace. Steve Shelley’s drumming is relaxed, like footsteps on wet pavement. The horns and the strings murmur like old flames.

“Romeo” functions as both a character study and a reflection. While it’s about Lynott, it also speaks to any artist brave enough to navigate the space between toughness and vulnerability without apology. Rogers really listens. And through that listening, he finds his own voice reaching back, connecting with another’s heartbeat, and gently carrying it forward.

‘Astor Place’ is available for pre-order through Think Like A Key Music and will be released on October 10, 2025, in vinyl, CD, and digital formats.
